Councilman and mayoral hopeful Carl DeMaio unveiled a program to encourage volunteers to help with city services outside a Clairemont recreation center he said was closed Thursday, even though two programs were being conducted inside at the time.

During his news conference, DeMaio referred to the North Clairemont Recreation Center being closed and having its programs and hours slashed since 2002.
Stacey LoMedico, the city’s park and recreation director, said the last time hours were cut was in 2006. The center is open 40 hours a week, but various groups pay to use it when it is closed, as it was Thursday morning.
