Candidate Assets low end Assets high end
DeMaio $1,735,781 $2,725,770

Filner $1,411,552 $2,139,535

The financial information for each candidate was compiled from records in the public domain, some of which provide only a value range for certain assets. The figures reflect a portion of each individual’s assets, as some information, such as savings accounts and certain other investments, aren’t publicly available. As current elected officials, each is required to provide varying amounts of detail about their property and investment holdings. Federal officials, as in Filner’s case, are required to disclose far more financial information because they vote on issues affecting Wall Street. In some cases, officials are also required to disclose a spouse’s income. The assessed value for all properties is from 2010. Divorce and public-employee records were also obtained for this report.

When City Councilman Carl DeMaio contributed more than $270,000 of his own money to support his 2012 bid for San Diego mayor, local pundits and his opponents were a bit shocked. Everyone knew he had money from a successful business career, but no one knew exactly how deep he’d be willing to dig into his pockets.
