Welcome to Dirty DeMaio!

There's a letter arriving this week in mailboxes throughout San Diego underlying the threat to women represented by Carl DeMaio:

Women’s right to choose and access to safe birth control are under attack.
For twenty years, Bob Filner has defended women… our right to choice, our right to healthcare, our right to equal pay.
Bob Filner has a 100% voting record on women’s health. He put the Lily Ledbetter Equal Pay for Women Act on President Obama’s desk.  Now, it’s the law.
Carl DeMaio is a stealth candidate who refused to answer Planned Parenthood’s questions about women’s access to health care. Carl DeMaio cannot be trusted.

Planned Parenthood Action Fund of the Pacific Southwest

We've heard before about Carl DeMaio's record with the Tea Party, and his hopes that they'll make San Diego a model for their extreme views-- repealing healthcare, oppose a woman's right to choose, make medicare a voucher system, eliminate the department of education.

But what does that mean right here in San Diego? Carl has already been supported by Newt Gingrich and funded by billionaire corporate polluters like the Koch Brothers.

But we've also already begun to see exactly what's in store for our own community: Cuts to firefighters and police, eliminating jobs... even opposing benefits for the widows of police officers killed in the line of duty:

Can we really trust our city to someone so unconcerned about keeping it safe?

Just before the June election, the San Diego Police Officers Association began running a TV ad. It highlighted Carl DeMaio's vote against death benefits for the widows and orphans of slain police officers.

At the time, DeMaio threatened legal action to block the ad, saying the ad was false. That is, accusing the widow of a slain police officer of lying. Subsequent investigation proved that DeMaio did, in fact, vote against the benefits.

Fast forward to now, and there's a new ad highlighting DeMaio's same votes against those death benefits for the widows and orphans of slain police officers. DeMaio doesn't like the ad this time around, but doesn't dispute that he cast the votes anymore. In fact, he seems to concede that he knew at the time that he was casting the votes and did it anyway for political reasons.

So if Carl is to be believed now, he knew he was lying when he accused the widow of a slain police officer fo lying. He was just hoping to be enough of a bully with that lie to get away with it, and it didn't work (maybe because he was trying to bully widows and orphans).
